Matthias started out as a rock and jazz drummer. He studied percussion at the Hamburg Musikhochschule, received numerous scholarships, and was awarded an advanced degree in Solo Performance. 'The Wire' has named him as arguably be the ‘most important solo percussionist working in Europe’.
He has cooperated with other musicians and composers such as John Zorn, David Moss, Carla Bley, Malcolm Goldstein, Mauricio Kagel, Hans Werner Henze, Vinko Globokar and Joachim Hespos.
For years now Matthias has been touring Europe, North and South America, Canada, Africa,Taiwan, Japan, India and Korea. He has been featured, as percussionist and composer, on numerous record labels, including Wergo, Hat Hut, Col Legno and CPO.
Over the course of the last ten years and although Matthias has never trained to become a composer, he has gradually become just that. His activities as a composer have grown and his own works are now performed worldwide.
Both, the renowned IMD in Darmstadt and the Bavarian State Opera have recently commissioned him to write music-theater works for their festivals.
